30 Αυγ 2021 · The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe after the Volga Delta. It is, however, the most preserved delta in Europe, with 25 types of ecosystems. The delta spans over 2,000 square miles and three main channels: Chilia in the north, Sulina in the middle and Sfantu Gheorghe in the south.
The Danube Delta is Europe’s largest remaining natural wetland – a truly unique ecosystem. The delta region includes extensive examples of unaltered rivers, lakes, reed beds, marshes, steppes, dunes, sandbars, coasts, lagoons, salt marshes and climax forests.
The Danube Delta is a dynamic, relatively wild ecosystem with a rich diversity of wetland habitats, as well as numerous lakes, ponds and marshes, which attract over 300 species of birds and 45 species of freshwater fish.
Dynamic and diverse. The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga. In European terms, it is huge (some 12 times the size of the Cota Donana Reserve on the Guadalquivir Delta, Spain).
Except for the even larger delta of the Volga, it is the most natural delta ecosystem left in Europe. Only 9% of the area is permanently above water (EEN, 1990) and it is a vitally important buffer between the hydrographical basin of the River Danube and the Black Sea.
