My theory on the series finale is that, in order to keep Deb from either going to jail or just going crazy, Dexter allows himself to be caught, thus sacrificing his own happiness for Deb's. This would prove that Dexter is not a psychopath: Vogel wrong in her diagnosis, and also break the "don't get caught" rule.
