I'm trying to make my own '80's like' CRPG and trying to figure out a way to recreate that old school sound, while making it sound authentic and real. The NES used simple triangle and pulse waves as well as a noise channel. I believe there was also the odd sample.
Wavetable synths (or “linear arithmetic” in the case of many Roland synths) are what you’re looking for, imho. Also, I agree the Roland Sound Canvas is a good candidate for being the original synth.
