Sudden Death This is the time duration in a chess game during which all remaining moves should be completed. The usual rate of play in the majority of international tournaments is 40 moves within 2 hours, 20 moves in 1 hour, and 30 minutes for the remainder of the game.
According to the rules of chess the game is immediately terminated the moment a dead position appears on the board. Some basic endings are always dead positions; for example: king against king;
8 Ιουλ 2022 · 5.2.2 The game is drawn when a position has arisen in which neither player can checkmate the opponent’s king with any series of legal moves. The game is said to end in a ‘dead position’. This immediately ends the game, provided that the move producing the position was in accordance with Article 3 and Articles 4.2 – 4.7.
In a sudden death time control (players have a limited time to play all of their moves), if it is discovered that both players have exceeded their time allotment, the game is a draw. (The game continues if it is not a sudden-death time control.)
14 Μαρ 2020 · Clock runs out and they lose on time if it is the move of the dead player. Otherwise the opponent could resign or move; unless a draw was offered before the death in which case they could accept the draw, resign, or move and wait for the clock to run out on the now dead opponent.
