The core accounts for almost half of Earth’s radius, but it amounts to only 16.1% of Earth’s volume. Most of Earth’s volume (82.5%) is its mantle, and only a small fraction (1.4%) is its crust. Earth is made of three layers: the crust, mantle, and core. The brittle crust and uppermost mantle are together called the lithosphere. Beneath the lithosphere, the mantle is solid rock that can flow, or behave plastically. The hot core warms the base of the mantle, which causes mantle convection.
Moonquakes of very low energy are caused by land tides produced by the pull of Earth’s gravity, and, from analysis of moonquake data, scientists believe the Moon has two layers: a crust, from the surface to 65 kilometers depth, and an inner, more dense mantle from the crust to the center at 3,700 kilometers.
