The node is enclosed in a capsule and has an indentation on one surface (along one of its long axes) known as the hilum. The hilum is the point at which arteries carrying nutrients and lymphocytes enter the lymph node and veins leave it.
So, the lymphatics of the head and neck can be divided in two groups: a superficial group of nodes and a vertical group of deep lymph nodes. So, the superficial lymph nodes receive lymph from the scalp, face and neck.

They are organised into a vertical chain, located within close proximity to the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath.
Cervical lymph nodes are lymph nodes found in the neck. Of the 800 lymph nodes in the human body, 300 are in the neck. [4] Cervical lymph nodes are subject to a number of different pathological conditions including tumours, infection and inflammation. [5]
