Mange and mites in wildlife are caused by several species of mites, including Sarcoptes, Demodex, and Chorioptes. These mites burrow into the skin of the affected animal, causing severe itching and inflammation. The infestation can lead to hair loss, thickened and wrinkled skin, and secondary bacterial infections.
7 Ιουλ 2021 · If you suspect you’ve seen a deer with mange, make sure it’s not just going through seasonal molting of its coat of hair, which is often confused with mange. As always, it’s a good idea to report sightings and photos of obviously sick deer to your state wildlife agency’s deer biologist.

It is not uncommon to see a wild mammal that looks debilitated and has a poor hair coat. In many instances, this is a condition called “mange”, most often caused by the mite, Sarcoptes scabeii (Figure 1), that lives in the skin of the animal.
Deer were diagnosed with dermatophilosis when they had grossly visible dermal encrustations with intralesional Dermatophilus congolensis, as determined by microscopic examination of skin smears or histologic examination, and, in some cases, confirmed by bacterial culture.
