The present work aims to investigate in a schematic and organized way all the main human mechanisms of psychological defence identified in the psychodynamic studies of world history, from Sigmund and Anna Freud to Perry, passing through Klein.

These two conceptions of the function of defenses—to avoid pain-ful feelings and affects and to repel the instinctual drives—were subse-quently reconciled by Anna Freud (1936), in the first systematic treatise on the development, function, and varieties of defense mechanisms.
Anna Freud listed nine defenses, some of which have fallen out of use: regression, repression, reaction-formation, isolation, undoing, projection, introjection, turning against the self, and reversal. A tenth, sublimation, “pertains rather to the study of the normal than to neurosis.”
