The Abyssinian is one of the oldest established cat breeds, being recognised in 1929 by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy. The breed was developed in the United Kingdom with references dating back to the 1890s.

4 Απρ 2020 · The Abyssinian breed is believed to have its ancestors in famous Egyptian kitten Zula ( sacred cat) that was brought to England by a British soldier Captain Barret Leonard from Alexandria Egypt while returning after the Abyssinian war.
Despite the name, more recent studies suggest that the breed more likely originated in southeast Asia and Indian Ocean coasts. Nevertheless, the Abyssinian as it is nowadays, was first refined and developed in the UK and then in the US as from 1890.
The breed’s name, Abyssinian, refers to Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia. However, the exact origin of these cats remains a mystery. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their origin, Abyssinians have a rich history and have been a beloved breed for many years.
