The most common choices for axis or rotation are the coordinates axes, that is, the x-axis, the y-axis, or the z-axis. Sometimes, however, it’s convenient to be able to use a different line as the axis.

Definition. The three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system consists of three perpendicular axes: the x -axis, the y -axis, the z -axis, and an origin at the point of intersection (0) of the axes. Because each axis is a number line representing all real numbers in ℝ, the three-dimensional system is often denoted by ℝ3.
The xyz coordinate axis system, denoted 3, is represented by three real number lines meeting at a common point, called the origin. The three number lines are called the x-axis, the y-axis, and the z-axis. Together, the three axes are called the coordinate axes.
In the cartesian system, the x-coordinate of a point is its perpendicular distance from the y-axis. It is measured along the x-axis which is positive along the positive direction and negative along the negative direction. For point P, it is +5 on the positive x-axis. This x-coordinate is called the abscissa.
The x x -axis is the horizontal line along which the wall to your left and the floor intersect. The y y -axis is the horizontal line along which the wall to your right and the floor intersect. The z z -axis is the vertical line along which the walls intersect.
