Magnitude is the size of the earthquake. An earthquake has a single magnitude. The shaking that it causes has many values that vary from place to place based on distance, type of surface material, and other factors. Earthquake intensity is defined as the degree of impact on the ground and buildings during an earthquake, typically classified into levels to indicate the extent of hazard and damage. It is a crucial concept used in earthquake research, prediction, engineering, and seismic design parameters.
Magnitude and Intensity measure different characteristics of earthquakes. Magnitude measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake. Magnitude is determined from measurements on seismographs. Intensity measures the strength of shaking produced by the earthquake at a certain location.
With the Richter scale, a single sharp jolt measures higher than a very long intense earthquake that releases more energy. The moment magnitude scale more accurately reflects the energy released and the damage caused.

The intensity, or macroseismic intensity, represents a classification of the severity of ground-motion shaking during an earthquake on the basis of observed effects at a given place (Grünthal et al. 1998). The word “macroseismic” refers to perceptible effects of earthquakes as opposed to instrumental observations.
What is intensity? Intensity describes how strong the shaking is at a given location. In the United States and many other locations, intensity values are described with Roman numerals from I (barely perceptible) to X (widespread destruction), using the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale.
