9 Μαΐ 2016 · We present a case in which the “diagnosis” of idiot savant was based on historical, clinical, and test data. To assess his calendar abilities, this individual was subsequently tested over a period of six months on his ability to determine the day of the week across approximately 1,000 years.
This chapter summarizes and reviews research on prodigies and savants. It also reviews what, to date, has been found about the nature and interplay of general and specific intellectual strengths and weaknesses more generally, offering a possible role for both specific talent and general ability.
Explores studies on the phenomenon of the idiot savant, the juxtaposition of severe mental handicap and prodigious mental ability first described during the 19th century. Savants are noted for exceptional mnemonic skills, artistic talents, and musical skills.
Theories to explain the condition are reviewed, newer research findings are highlighted, and the far- reaching implications of the idiot savant syndrome for understanding normal brain function, particularly memory, are outlined.
Idiot savant is the term used to describe a person with a developmental disability (e.g., autism, mental retardation) with an advanced skill, often in mathematical and memory abilities [1, 2]. Approximately 10% of individuals with autism are idiot savants.
Abstract. Most investigations of savant skills in autism are based on individual case reports. The present study investigated rates and types of savant skills in 137 individuals with autism (mean age 24 years). Intellectual ability ranged from severe intellectual impairment to superior functioning.
