Idiot savant is the term used to describe a person with a developmental disability (e.g., autism, mental retardation) with an advanced skill, often in mathematical and memory abilities [1, 2]. Approximately 10% of individuals with autism are idiot savants.
Savant syndrome (/ ˈ s æ v ə n t, s æ ˈ v ɑː n t / SAV-ənt, sə-VAHNT, US also / s ə ˈ v ɑː n t / sav-AHNT) is a phenomenon where someone demonstrates exceptional aptitude in one domain, such as art or mathematics, despite significant social or intellectual impairment.

An oxymoronic and outdated term for this condition is “ idiot savant.” More modern usage refers to this as savant syndrome, or in some cases autistic savant where diagnosable autism is present.
The five main themes were: 1) definition and characteristics of savant syndrome, 2) demographic characteristics of savants, 3) types and extent of savant skills, 4) savant syndrome and ASD, and 5) cognitive profiles of individuals with ASD and savant syndrome.
Current uses of the term (idiot) savant are reviewed. In contrast to the original use of the term, which emphasized certain kinds of exceptional skill and general mental deficit, recent usage has expanded to include a variety of disabling conditions and levels of exceptionality.
