22 Μαΐ 2023 · Savant syndrome is a rare condition that developmental disorders, intellectual disabilities, and extraordinary abilities in specific areas may characterize. It may present at any age and is commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder.
Savant syndrome (/ ˈ s æ v ə n t, s æ ˈ v ɑː n t / SAV-ənt, sə-VAHNT, US also / s ə ˈ v ɑː n t / sav-AHNT) is a phenomenon where someone demonstrates exceptional aptitude in one domain, such as art or mathematics, despite significant social or intellectual impairment.
Savant syndrome (formerly called idiot savant syndrome) refers to an exceedingly rare but remarkable condition in which persons with severe mental handicaps have some isolated but spectacular islands of genius or brilliance that stand in stark, incongruous contrast with the serious limitations of the overall handicaps.
Idiot savant is the term used to describe a person with a developmental disability (e.g., autism, mental retardation) with an advanced skill, often in mathematical and memory abilities [1, 2]. Approximately 10% of individuals with autism are idiot savants.
An oxymoronic and outdated term for this condition is “ idiot savant.” More modern usage refers to this as savant syndrome, or in some cases autistic savant where diagnosable autism is present.
Theories to explain the condition are reviewed, newer research findings are highlighted, and the far- reaching implications of the idiot savant syndrome for understanding normal brain function, particularly memory, are outlined.
