After defining social freedom and unfreedom in descriptive terms, I shall explore the possibility of measuring specific social freedoms and unfreedoms in terms of their various parameters, and show why these magnitudes cannot be aggregated into a measure of overall social freedom.
I shall first propose definitions of social freedom (to be distinguished from other concepts of freedom) which could be acceptable regardless of one's moral point of view. The second part examines the possibility of measuring various parameters of social unfreedom and freedom.
