28 Δεκ 2020 · Sound is a type of mechanical wave or an oscillation of matter. A wave is a disturbance that travels from one location to another in a medium. The key here is that the points in the medium oscillate in place while the disturbance itself travels. For example, consider a wave done by a crowd at a ball game.
Sound is a longitudinal wave: the direction of vibration is parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Sound waves are faster in solids/liquids than gases; the particles are very close so vibrations are easily passed on.
For a sound to be made and heard, three things need to happen. First, an object vibrates. A vibrating object makes tiny, very fast back-and-forth movements. For example, when a musician strums guitar strings, the strings vibrate. The vibration moves the surrounding air and produces waves of sound. Second, the sound waves pass into a medium.
I can explain why sounds are quieter at a greater distance, and why sound waves travel faster in solids and liquids than gases but not at all through a vacuum.
