14 Αυγ 2020 · Value systems are fundamental to understanding how culture expresses itself. Values are deeply felt and often serve as principles that guide people in their perceptions and behaviors. Using our values, certain ideas are judged to be right or wrong, good or bad, important or not important, desirable or not desirable.
It focuses on the concepts of belief and value and the impact they have on the communi-cator’s behaviour in intercultural communication. According to Rokeach (1973: 2), ‘Beliefs are inferences made by an observer about underlying states of expectancy’.
Values are core concepts and ideas of what we consider good or bad, right or wrong, or what is worth the sacrifice. Our values are central to our self-image, what makes us who we are. Like beliefs, our values may not be based on empirical research or rational thinking, but they are even more resistant to change than are beliefs.
