The concept of the risk factor is nowadays absolutely central in clinical practice, especially in disease prevention. In this paper we present general definitions of risk factors and related concepts, the ways they strengthen each other and the possibility of modifying them for disease prevention.
This chapter reviews the definition of risk, and locates the concept in a family of related terms, including probability, danger, hazard, safety, and vulnerability.
Defining risks by source We indicated that risks should be identified by their originating source. Often, companies inconsistently define risks – some are defined by source and some by outcome.
