Pain threshold is defined as the minimum intensity of a stimulus that is perceived to be painful. Previously, this threshold was believed to be uniform across individuals, such that given intensity of a stimulus was thought to produce a given pain response.
The pain threshold refers to the amount of stimulus intensity required to evoke a painful sensation. It marks the transition from the absence of pain sensation to the presence of pain sensation. In the laboratory, it is determined through psychophysical procedures that control for biases and uncertainties in assessing painfulness.
