Reading is one strand of literacy. The reading process is complex and multi-dimensional. Effective teachers have an understanding of this complexity and are able to use a range of teaching approaches that produce confident and independent readers. Recent work completed by the NCCA
Academics often find themselves and their views of reading drawn into this political maelstrom. This review will attempt to present an inclusive and integrated view of the reading process, one which has achieved widespread acceptance par ticularly by teachers and other educational workers.

What is Reading Comprehension? What does it mean to read and understand a text? Central to any conceptualization of reading comprehension is that it requires the construction of a mental representation of the information in a text (Kintsch, 1988).
In contrast to basing reading instruction on theories or philosophies, knowledge of the large body of scientific research called the science of reading allows practitioners to select and implement practices about reading that will be the most efective for the most students.
A basic question concerning reading is its definition, for many teachers base their understanding and philosophy of teaching read-ing upon descriptions of this complex process.
