The Delhi sultanate was created after the rise to power of the Ghurids, rulers of a kingdom centered in Ghur (now Ghowr, Afghanistan). The ruler Muʿizz al-Din Muhammad ibn Sam, commonly called Muhammad of Ghur, conquered the north Indian plain in the late 1100s and early 1200s.

Following his death, the Delhi Sultanate saw a succession of weak rulers, disputing Muslim nobility, assassinations, short-lived tenures. Power shifted from Rukn ud-Din Firuz to Razia Sultana and others, until Ghiyas ud-Din Balban came to power and ruled from 1266 to 1287.
