Demodectic mange may occur in older dogs because the immune system often declines with age. Dogs who have a weakened immune system due to illness, malnutrition, or certain medications are also susceptible to demodectic mange.
An older dog should not get demodicosis unless there is an underlying problem with the immune system. In such cases, demodicosis is considered an indication to seek a more serious hidden condition such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, or an immune-suppressive hormone imbalance.
In general, any dog with a suspected immune deficiency should not be used for breeding. Older dogs experiencing immune deficiency due to cancer will have an outlook dependent on the cancer location and type as well as treatment pursued.

Three forms of demodicosis are seen in dogs: localized demodectic mange, juvenile-onset generalized demodicosis, and adult-onset generalized demodicosis. Localized demodicosis is seen in dogs usually <1 year old, and most of these cases resolve spontaneously.
27 Οκτ 2021 · Treatment of Demodicosis in Dogs. Localized demodicosis has a very good prognosis. These mild infections usually resolve with topical treatment. Some cases resolve with no treatment at all. In contrast, generalized demodicosis may require a long, or multi-faceted treatment process.
Summary. Demodicosis or demodectic mange is an inflammatory parasitic disorder. It is characterised by excessive numbers of demodectic mites. Demodex mites are normal residents of canine skin and Demodex canis is recognised as the most common species in dogs.
