In 1972, Goodall and her husband published a children’s book about their son called Grub: The Bush Baby. But their marriage deteriorated. They divorced in 1974, and a year later she married Derek Bryceson, director of Tanzania’s national parks, who proved to be a deeply compatible partner.
Lamentably, Derek died in cancer after 5 years of their marriage, in 1980. Jane found solace with her family, friends and time in Gomb but never married again. Eventually, he overthrew the grief and still stays optimistic, determined and hopeful.
Bryceson divorced his first wife in 1974, and their separation was not an amicable one.
