22 Ιαν 2020 · George Donner, Samuel Donner and Lavina Murphy were almost certainly dead which left Tamsen Donner and Lewis Keseberg. Tamsen had survived until now under far harsher conditions than she would endure now, seeing as the weather was milder and the prospect for hunting opened up.
The survivors of the Donner Party settled throughout California, and some became quite well known with numerous descendants. Helen Whitworth is a member of the McCutchen family. Her great-uncle was William McCutchen, a hero of the Donner Party, who rode ahead for supplies and returned with the Second Relief.
The party was organized by the Donner brothers, Jacob and George, along with James Reed, all of Illinois. They set out in April of 1846 and in a reasonable amount of time had reached South Pass, a landmark on the trail west where they inadvertently made their first fatal error.

The Donner Party, or Donner–Reed Party, was a group of American pioneers that set out for California in a wagon train in May 1846. Departing from Independence, Missouri, they were delayed by a series of mishaps and mistakes, and spent the winter of 1846–47 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada.
