I can push the monitor back to the edge of the desk. I think Ergotron recommends against positioning the monitor far behind its mount point. The issue I ran into before was the Ergotron arm running into nearby walls or shelves or items on the desk.
Perhaps instead of marring the top of your desk, you could make a wedge to place against the edge of the desk and screw it to a paint stirrer or some other thin wood. That would give you a square surface to attach your monitor mount to without cutting into the top.
