Most likely, you're raising the graphics settings in DeSmuME higher than your hardware can handle without considering the CPU dependency on DeSmuME's graphics engine. For the record, I can run Pokemon Diamond at 4x speed quite easily on my 2009 Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz.

I’m not sure which device your running Desmume, but on Mac, you can speed up by: Emulation (on top bar) -> show execution control -> slider where you can speed up or slow down from 0x to 10x
There's an actual fast-forward option that you can set a button for in the Hotkey Config options. You could also use the Increase/Decrease Speed keys to quickly set the FPS target (up to 4x).
21 Δεκ 2017 · To make DeSmuME run faster, you need to follow the given steps: Allow “Patch DealyLoop SWI” if you have to use an external BIOS image. Using a BIOS image is not recommended, as it slows down the DeSmuME emulator instead of desmume speed up. Use the “A” function.

So in VisualBoyAdvance (a GameBoy Advance emulator), you can speed up the game you're running by holding a certain key that you set (I think you set it, it may be a default thing). I was wondering if DeSmuME had a similar "fast-forward button" feature- a key I could hold down that would speed up the emulation...
