Important Information. Reservations for Desolation Overnight Permits are available through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) at Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777. Permits will no longer be mailed. The Pacific Ranger District will no longer accept reservations by phone, mail or fax.
In order to protect its unique beauty and wilderness character, human access is limited and certain activities are restricted in the Desolation. There is a quota on overnight use from the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30 of each year.
Day visit permits for the Desolaon Wilderness are free! 1.Obtain a permit from the green box located at the trailhead or at one of the ranger staons on pg. 11. 2.Read all regulaons listed on permit. 3.Sign top poron and display prominently on pack.
First-come, first-served overnight permits are available the day of entry at the office locations and business hours listed below. Within 7 days of your “Date of Entry”, you may print your permit yourself, or bring your confirmation email and photo ID to a Forest Service office to have them print it.
