This map shows the locations of oil spills and other incidents for which NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) provided scientific support for the response. It also shows the locations of other major spills, but it does not show the location of every significant oil spill.
The Oil Spill Planning & Response Map Viewer contains Geographic Response Strategy (GRS) maps of site-specific protection strategies and Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps which identify critical habitats, species, and other socio-economic resources which may be at risk during an oil spill.
This folder contains PDF maps showing the surface location of spilled oil for several consecutive days, as well as a forecast for the following day. The Nearshore Surface Oil Forecasts were forecast estimates for the nearshore location of oil for the next 24, 48, or 72 hours.

On April 20, 2010, the offshore oil drilling platform Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

The second site, from U. of So. FL, shows the oil still being a long ways from Destin in its farthest out prediction for the evening of May 11. 1.
16 Ιουν 2024 · During a major spill response, trajectory maps are created to show predictions for the path of spilled oil. Trajectory maps are produced using a NOAA-developed computer model called GNOME (General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment), which helps to predict the movement of oil.
