The Detroit Police Department asked for federal agencies to become involved in taking down YBI in 1980, but the idea of being a gang member remained in many young peoples' minds. The public also developed a general distrust and overall hysteria over the threat of gangs in the city.
Gang members, at his best, raided and destroyed YBI drug houses, telling YBI dealers they could either “Pony down or pack up and leave town.” This meant they could join up with the new crew of drug bandits and turn their backs on YBI or get out of the business all-together.

Young Boys Incorporated, also known as Y.B.I., was a major drug organization in Detroit, Michigan, who were among the first African American drug cartels to operate on inner-city street corners.
In the second wave of indictments, in 1987, 26 affilliates were indicted, notably, attorney W. Otis Culpepper who was locally known in the city of Detroit for defending drug-ring figures and murder defendants. Cuplepper' tax violations that officials say are linked to the Young Boys Inc. drug ring.
