In this unit, we shall give you a general introduction to varieties of prose as well as to different prose forms. If you read this unit carefully, you should be able to: distinguish between prose and ~oetry; define descriptive, narrative and expository prose; describe prose forms such as the short story, novel, essay, biography and autobiography.
Prose is a form of written or spoken language that is not structured or organized according to the rhythmic and metrical patterns of poetry. It is the most common and straightforward mode of literary expression, characterized by its natural flow, grammatical structure, and ordinary syntax.

different kinds of writings taken from various periods in history. They have been taken from well-known authors and are meant to serve as an introduction to English-language prose. We have tried to pick out texts that are relevant to current social issues and problems in order to arouse the curiosity and interest of the students.
