Citrus canker disease cycle. Upon reaching the leaf surface, X. citri starts growing epiphytically (1) establishing a bacterial biofilm (2). Under favorable temperature and relative humidity conditions, bacterial cells penetrate the leaf mesophyll through stomates or wounds starting an infection (3).
