The average CEF has a distribution rate of more than 6% of net asset value (NAV). However, we caution income-seeking investors not to get myopic when it comes to their CEF investments. For long-term investors, a CEF's total return is far more important than its distribution rate.
For example, a fund with a $10 NAV that pays a 5 cent per month distribution. (60 cents per year) is said to have a distribution rate of 6%. If the market price trades at $9 per share (10% discount), the fund’s distribution rate is 6.7%.
