30 Ιουν 2023 · At least 200,000 Muslim spouses have gotten divorced between 2017 and 2021, raising concerns about the Islamic family institution in the country. This paper aims to identify the causes of ṭalāq among Muslim couples in Malaysia as well as the consequences of marriage dissolution for the family.
23 Νοε 2023 · The number of Muslim divorces registered an increase of 45.8 per cent in 2022 (46,138) as compared to 2021 (31,650). The increase was attributed to cases that were carried forward from years. Three states recorded the high increase of Muslim divorces were Kedah (113.6%), followed by Sabah (94.5%) and Perlis (83.5%).

Malaysia started out the 21st century with divorce rates at their historically lowest level, far lower than those in Western countries. Other than Muslim community, rising trends of divorce can be seen in Malaysian tribes and among the overall residents. Figure 1 showcases the age specific divorce rates in Malaysia where it can be seen that male between 30-34 years of age contribute 11.4% of the total divorce rate (Statista, 2019).
The alarming rate of divorce occurrence among Malaysian Muslims calls for an inevitable inquiry into the reasons and factors causing dissolution in the Shariah Courts. This inquiry becomes necessary because of the social stigmatization it causes in the public to both parties.
