If you have an extra slot add an internal drive for just music. Otherwise add an external drive. Purge your collection. Perform searches on you drive for *.mp3, *.wav etc. Sort results by name and see if you have a bunch of duplicates. I only put files on my dj laptop that are useful for gigs.

One note about the likes of iTunes: you can't always be sure you'll have access to the songs for always, thanks to DRM, unless you're uploading your own .mp3s/.oggs/.flacs, in which case you might as well just use the hard drive option.
