19 Νοε 2022 · Diffuse midline glioma (DMG), formerly called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), is a high-grade malignant pediatric brain tumor with a near-zero survival rate. To date, only radiation therapy provides marginal survival benefit; however, the median survival time remains less than a year.
Conventional radiotherapy, limited to the involved area of tumour, is the mainstay of treatment for DIPG. A total radiation dosage ranging from 5400 to 6000 cGy, administered in daily fractions of 150 to 200 cGy over 6 weeks, is standard.
At the same time, if the tumor continues to grow, those functions can be affected directly by the tumor itself. This is why treatment must be started as quickly as possible to control tumor growth. The most effective and most common initial treatment is radiation therapy .
