The Ixodes tick, commonly called a black-legged tick, are ticks that carry Lyme disease. In the east and upper midwest regions of the United States, the primary tick species is Ixodes scapularis (or deer tick) and the related western U.S. version is the Ixodes pacificus (western black-legged tick).
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria that is spread to humans by tick bites. Anyone who has been bitten by a black-legged deer tick is at risk for Lyme disease. The highest risk groups include those living in or visiting endemic areas, especially people who spend significant time outdoors such as children, gardeners, hikers, or outdoor workers.
