9 Δεκ 2023 · If a toad is under sufficiently oxygenated water, they can breathe. Since these animals can’t swim, they might only be in the water for a short period of time before resurfacing and returning to their normal land activities.
The frogs, which include toads, are the most recognizable and diverse of the amphibians. Globally, there are more than 7,200 species of frogs with 28 species occurring in Virginia. Except for Antarctica, they are found on every continent and in almost every imaginable habitat on earth, from arid deserts to boreal forests.
African dwarf frogs, tropical clawed frogs, Indonesian floating frogs, African clawed frogs, and Surinam toads can all be kept in a fully aquatic environment. Fire-bellied toads, leopard frogs, American bullfrogs, Vietnamese mossy frogs, and Budgett’s frogs can swim, but cannot live their entire lives in water.

For example, mangrove swamps are flooded daily by tidal fluctuations which results in predictable levels of salt water in surrounding standing water.
