14 Φεβ 2024 · Utilities add disinfectants, such as chlorine or chloramine, to tap water to kill germs and make it safe to drink. Low levels of disinfectants kill germs as water travels through pipes to your tap. The low levels of disinfectants allowed in tap water do not make people sick.
Add 25 drops or ¼ teaspoon of Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach to 1.75 gallons of water (4 drops to 1 quart). Stir thoroughly. Tip. Only use regular, unscented chlorine. Wait. Allow the treated water to stand for 30 minutes. Properly treated water will have a slight chlorine odor. Repeat as needed.

Compare this to our Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach with CLOROMAX®, which uses sodium hypochlorite as its active ingredient and is in the class of chlorine bleach.
When in doubt, read the ingredients list: If it is made with sodium hypochlorite, it's a chlorine bleach. Does Non-Chlorine Bleach Disinfect? This is where things can get tricky. Hydrogen peroxide, which is used in non-chlorine bleaches, does have disinfectant and sterilization effects.
