9 Απρ 2024 · The Canine Heartworm Guidelines by the American Heartworm Society (AHS) has been newly revised. These published guidelines, which address heartworm prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, were last updated in 2020. The revised version also includes a new section on spectrum of care.
The overall goals of treatment are to safely and successfully eliminate current adult and immature heartworms, prevent new infections and minimize treatment related complications in your dog. The recommended treatment consists of the 5 steps outlined below.
Dogs with severe heartworm disease may require antibiotics, pain relief medications, special diets, diuretics to remove fluid accumulation in the lungs, and/or drugs to improve heart function prior to treatment for the heartworms.
1 Σεπ 2021 · At THS, we have the resources to treat heartworm in shelter dogs using the AHS-recommended 3-dose melarsomine protocol, which is considered the safest and most effective treatment in most cases. However, at the outreach clinics, where prevalence typically reaches double digits, this is rarely an option.
Treatment with anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, cage rest, supportive care, and intravenous fluids is usually effective in these cases. In addition to the drug that is used to kill adult heartworms, your dog will receive a drug to kill microfilariae (heartworm larvae).
