Worms may be vomited or passed in the feces. In the early stages, migrating larvae occasionally cause pneumonia, which can be associated with coughing. Diarrhea with mucus may be evident. Infection is diagnosed by microscopic detection of eggs in feces. Several drugs are effective for treatment of roundworm infections in cats.

This guideline aims to give an overview of these worms and their significance and to suggest control measures for the most important species in order to prevent animal and/or human infection.
The cat's feces will appear black and tarry due to blood in the feces. If too much blood is lost, the cat can become anemic and may die if left untreated. Fortunately, like roundworms, these worms are easily diagnosed and treated.
Worms in the stool is an uncommon finding and most pet owners won’t be aware their cat has worms unless he or she has a heavy parasite burden. Symptoms can vary depending on the species of worm, but typically, the following symptoms are common for hookworm, roundworm and tapeworm infections.

Moreover, positive cats living in contact with immunocompromised people should be treated.
