In Frye’s terms, both Justice O’Connor and Justice Blackmun write “intentional doggerel.” An example of antipoetry, Blackmun’s quatrain mocks poetry as a means of knowledge. Instead of parodying “incompetent attempts at verse,” he addresses Shakespeare, the language’s most celebrated poet.
Frye characterized doggerel as an unfinished creative process, in which a "prose initiative" has never assumed the associative qualities of true poetry and reveals this failure by attempting to resolve the technical difficulties through any means that suggest themselves.
