Following the abolition of slavery and the slave trade, the freed slaves celebrated by engaging in masquerade, dancing and singing in the streets and embracing carnival as an expression of their new found freedom. Here are some of the traditional Carnival Costumes you will see in Dominica.
Carnivals. As a celebration of identity, integration, and freedom, carnival is one of the most important activities in popular Dominican culture. The most spontaneous and creative expressions of the national culture are conveyed from February to March with costumes and multicolored masks, characters and troupes, in an urban frenzy of joy and fun.
Lechones de Santiago: these are groups of people in costume who parade through the streets during carnival. Each neighborhood has its own “careta”, or mask, which the lechones wear to distinguish themselves from each other and avoid fights. Their costumes include bells, ribbons, mirrors and bladders, as well as a belt known as “longaniza”.
