The NYC Dominican population was 702,330 (7.9% of the city) in the 2020 census, representing an increase from the 2010 census number 576,701 (7.0% of the city). [11] Nearly 70% of Dominican New Yorkers live in the Bronx and Manhattan. In Manhattan, Washington Heights and Inwood are majority Dominican neighborhoods.
This study focuses on the demographic and socioeconomic changes occurring within the Dominican population of the New York metropolitan area between 1970 and 2019. By 2019 Dominicans had become the largest Latino nationality in New York City having surpassed Puerto Ricans a decade earlier in sheer numbers.
First counted at 532,647 people in 2000, the Dominican population gradually increased, peaking at 609,885 in 2006, and then declining slightly to 602,093 in 2007 due to emigration from New York City to the suburbs or back to Dominican Republic.
In 2020, there were about 1.19 million Puerto Rican-origin people living in the New York City metro area. This report analyzes trends in poverty in New York City over a period spanning from the year 1990 to 2019, including maps of poverty hot spots in the city.
