Let’s say we have a source emitting sound with the frequency ν. In this case, the maxima of the amplitude of the wave produced occur at intervals of the period T = 1 ν.
The Doppler effect describes how the observed frequency of waves is changed by the relative motion between the source of the waves and the observer. When a source approaches an observer, the observer encounters waves with a higher frequency.
