Before they came together, Borofsky was an award-winning singer-songwriter, while Greenstein and Muramatsu (best friends since second grade in Princeton Junction, New Jersey) were the award-winning duo The Garden Verge. Girlyman started in 2001 as a harmony-driven folk-pop trio with Tylan “Ty” Greenstein, Doris Muramatsu and Nate Borofsky. In January 2010, they added drummer JJ Jones to the band.
Doris Muramatsu and Ty Greenstein, who met in the second grade, had recently abandoned their former project as a modern folk duo; their friend Nate Borofsky has just moved to New York after four solo rears on the Boston singer-songwriter circuit.
