While the materials in this book begin from foundational principles of Western tonal music notation, what we teach here is really not all elementary.
A Benedictine monk called Guido d’Arezzo is widely credited with creating the foundation for the music notes drawing system we use today, which can capture complex melodies and rhythms. He came up with a ‘solmization’ system which attributes a syllable to each musical note in a scale.
The recourse to art was because it was more capacious, discursively and institutionally, than music. Music, of all the arts, fancied itself as having an artistic monopoly on sound, but during the 1980s it was only able to muster up the ideas of two old warriors— musique concrète and John Cage—to lay aesthetic claim to the new activity.
