When I have serious trouble sleeping, my low dose alprazolam and Doxepin does wonders. (I used to require much higher dose. The insomnia has improved over the years and I no longer need as much). Doxepin is so much better than Trazodone, which is what GP's often prescribe for sleeping issues.
It takes 10-100x more of the drug for its anti-depressant activity. Al of the clinical data on Doxepin as an insomnia drug are at doses of 6 mg or less. 3 mg is all that’s really necessary for that action. But, you can’t get a generic at that dose in the US.
A small dose (previously just 3mg, now 6mg) seems to help me fall back asleep. I don’t experience any noticeable side effects. I have tried to wean off, but seem to actually need it.
