26 Ιαν 2023 · In this publication, we continue our Therapeutic Cheat Sheet series by highlighting the uses of Doxepin in dermatology, which has been described as one of the most impactful oral and topical medications used in the treatment of recalcitrant, chronic itch related to cutaneous disease.
Topical doxepin is used to relieve itching in patients with certain types of eczema. It appears to work by preventing the effects of histamine, which is a substance produced by the body that causes itching.
This medication is used to relieve itching from certain skin conditions (such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, neurodermatitis). It should be used only for a short time (no more than 8 days).
Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant well known by dermatologists for its antipruritic effects when used at low doses. However, it is not commonly known that the US Food and Drug Administration approves doses up to 300 mg/day.

1 Φεβ 2021 · After visiting multiple dermatologists, the patient tried numerous topical, systemic, procedural, and complementary and alternative therapies, including oral and topical doxepin, for his scalp pruritus, all of which failed (Table I). He tried oral doxepin 20 mg daily with no side effects or benefits.
