Zumla, now one of the world's most respected infectious and tropical diseases experts, and Professor of Infectious Diseases and International Health at University College London (UCL), often reflects on these experiences and second chances that fate has given him.
Sir Alimuddin Zumla, KBE, [12] FRCP, FRCPath, FRSB (born 15 May 1955) is a British-Zambian professor of infectious diseases and international health at University College London Medical School.
Professor Sir Alimuddin Zumla is professor of infectious diseases and international health at University College London. He is also a consultant infectious diseases at UCLH, honorary consultant at Royal Free Hospital, and holds a UK NIHR senior Investigator award.
Professor Sir Alimuddin (Ali) Zumla is an internationally renowned clinician-scientist -dually qualified in Medicine (MBChB) and Science (PhD). He is accredited in Internal Medicine, Clinical immunology and Infectious Diseases.

Developing life threatening, crippling tuberculous meningitis while a junior doctor working in London did not stop Alimuddin Zumla from going on to make what colleagues judge to be a “unique, remarkable, and substantial” contribution to improving health care globally.
Biodata. Sir Zumla was born in Chipata, Zambia in 1955. He is dually qualified in Medicine (MB.ChB) and Science (PhD). He nearly lost his life to meningitis when he was working as a junior doctor in London in 1982.
