From its beginnings 50 years ago, around the same time the first wave of the Italian Jet Set were fostering enthusiasm for motor racing, and marques such as Ferrari and Alfa-Romeo were producing their most iconic models — the Driving Shoe’s purpose was to replace traditional shoes while driving.
Designed by Gianni Mostile and patented by the snappily named Italian brand Car Shoe in 1963, the driving shoe did exactly what it said on the tin - provided drivers with an alternative pair of shoes to avoid wearing out the soles on their formal loafers or brogues.
The History of The Driving Shoe. The iconic driving shoe design was patented in 1963 (The patent is pictured above) by Gianni Mostile. At first it was a shoe for the rich, a shoe designed specifically for driving, not everyone could afford leather shoes for the sole purpose of driving.
Racing shoes were popularized among motorsport fans and the general public after the release of the Speed Cat and its successor Future Cat, developed by Sparco and Puma, and their use by use by German Formula One champion Michael Schumacher during the early 2000s.
